After you launch the Positions Trainer:
1. Open the «About the program» menu and choose your native language.
The interface of the Positions Trainer will switch to your native language instantly.
2. If you wish, you can have the comments read aloud — press the «Voice the comments» button.
3. If you wish, you can press «Position editor» to create or load your own positions in PDN format.
4. If you wish, you can read the books by pressing the «Books» button.
5. The «About the positions» window explains how to use the positions trainer.
6. Next you should press the «Player» button and enter your first name and surname. You can add or delete a player at any time.
7. Above the window with the player’s name there is a window showing which type of positions the player is solving or which rating category they are working towards. To the right of the player’s name there is a window for loading the player’s photograph. Click on this window with the mouse and select a photo file with the extension jpg, jpeg, bmp or png. Above your photograph the trainer will show the rating category you have achieved. Below the photograph it will show the total number of points you have scored for solving positions.
8. To the right of the player’s photograph is one of the trainer’s main buttons — Positions.
Pressing «Positions» opens 8 menus for loading positions, and menus 1, 2 and 8 have submenus of their own.
Menu 9 is used for loading PDN files.
9. Above the «Positions» button there is a «Show solution» button with two submenus: «Main line» and «Main line with sublines».
10. To the right of «Show solution» the tempo count T= is displayed. This is very important for classic positions.
11. Below the tempo count T= there is a cogwheel-shaped «Settings» button, where you can set the number of positions to solve (10 by default) and choose whether the positions are shown on the board at random or in sequence. You can also set «In sequence» starting from position 5 if you have already solved 4 positions and want to continue from there.
Here you can also choose one of 4 board designs, whichever you like best. We recommend the Classic board.
12. To the right of the «Settings» button is the «Score chart» window, which shows a colour chart and the number of points scored for each correctly solved position. You can reset the points to zero at any time; the total score under the player’s photograph is not reset.
13. Above the «Score chart» window is the second main button, «Test», where you can choose one of 7 rating categories to work towards.
The trainer itself will tell you how many positions you need to solve to achieve the category you want. Once you achieve it, the category will be displayed above your photograph.
14. To the right of the «Test» button is the third main button, «Next», which you press after solving a position correctly.
If you press «Next» without solving the position correctly, one point is deducted.
15. To the right of «Next» there are 6 buttons. To find out what each one does, simply hover the mouse over it.
It should be added that the >? button is needed for the «Opening traps» submenu, so that the solution stops at the move marked with a question mark and the player solves that position themselves. If the question mark belongs to a White move, the board flips automatically and the player has to solve the position for Black.
16. To the right of the 6 buttons is the position counter. It shows the number of positions and which position is currently on the board.
17. To the right of the position counter there are two green hearts. If the player makes a wrong move, one of the hearts disappears and the player is given one more attempt at the correct move. If the player makes a wrong move a second time, the second green heart disappears too, the position is locked, a point is deducted and the player is invited to press «Next».
18. Below the two green hearts is the fourth main button, «Results», which shows Date, Time, Player, Position or Category, Score, Correct, Wrong, Skipped, Remaining, Viewed, Total. This is very important information for the player, for parents and for the coach.
19. The first large window, at the top to the right of the board, is used for the task set to the player. The player should read or listen to the task for the position to be solved. In the bottom right-hand corner of the window there is an icon for enlarging the text.
20. The second large window, below the task window, displays the moves and comments contained in the solution, as well as the sublines. You can left-click on them to move through the solution of the position. This is very convenient for studying a position. The bottom right-hand corner of this window also has an icon for enlarging the text of the solution.
21. The «Exit» button in the bottom right-hand corner closes the positions trainer.
