1. WHAT THIS PROGRAM IS
————————————————————————-

«Edeon-Openings 2026″ is a modern trainer-laboratory into which a thousand hours of work went in a single year.

«Edeon-Openings 2026″ is designed for studying any chess opening, for every player from beginner to grandmaster, and it makes studying your favourite game dozens of times more effective, using methods tested by the author.

In «Edeon-Openings 2026″ you can:
* work through opening positions with hints and solutions, manually or automatically at an adjustable speed;
* take tests for any rating category — from junior categories up to grandmaster;
* play games against the Stockfish engine from a given opening and earn any category from junior up to master of sports, and test your strength against Stockfish at «Grandmaster» level.
* analyse a position by the classical method and with the engine;
* search instantly for any current position in a database of 206,284 games and in a superbase of 155 chess books;
* compose your own positions in the editor and check them straight away in the trainer with the Stockfish 18 engine;
* read quickly and conveniently, automatically and at an adjustable speed, any of the chess books supplied with «Edeon-Openings 2026″.

In the picture, to the right of the trainer, is the «Game database» with 206,284 games by players rated above 2600 and the games of every world champion, with the number of games and moves from the first three lines together with wins, draws and losses. This «Game database» is called up with the «G» button (below the «Test» button)
Below the game database is the superbase of 155 books, with 18,282 games with written comments from 155 books.
This «superbase of 155 books» is called up with the «GR» button (above the «Game» button)

The interface of the chess opening trainer is available in nine languages: Russian, English, Ukrainian,
Polish, Dutch, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Latvian and Belarusian, and it has a voice module that can speak in 9 languages.

2. WHERE TO START
————————————————————————-
Step 1. Choose your language.
Click «About the program» and select the interface language you want. Along with the
language, the following change: the button captions, the opening book, the game database and
the selection of books.

Step 2. Introduce yourself.
Click «Player», enter your name and press «Add player».
This matters: the rating category, the rating and the results are saved separately for
each player. A photograph can be set by clicking on the portrait frame.

Step 3. Choose what to work on today.
Open «Positions» or «Test», or press «Game».

Step 4. Work with the position on the board.
Read the task and the comments, and make moves with the mouse directly on the board.

On launch the program opens full screen and shows the starting position.

3. THE MAIN WINDOW

ON THE LEFT — the chessboard. Moves are made with the mouse: click on a piece and on the
square it is going to.

TOP RIGHT OF THE BOARD — the analysis panel:
«Analysis» — switches the Stockfish engine on and off;
SF18 — the engine indicator (the dot lights up when it is calculating);
the evaluation and «D:» — the numerical evaluation of the position and the search depth.

MIDDLE RIGHT OF THE BOARD — two text fields: the task with comments and
the record of the game’s moves. The «A» buttons to the right of the fields enlarge the font.

BOTTOM LEFT OF THE BOARD — buttons:
«S» — starting position. Resets the board and clears the move record,
the comments and the name of the loaded file;
«GR» — «Game record» (section 10);
«Game» — a game against Stockfish (section 7);
«Player» — selecting and adding a player.

BOTTOM CENTRE, UNDER THE BOARD:
«Show solution» — shows the correct continuation;
«Positions» — choosing a section of tasks;
the cogwheel — settings and the position editor (section 9);
«T=» — analysis of the position (section 8) by Znosko-Borovsky
«GA» — game analysis (section 8);
The «up-down arrows» button — flip the board;
«G» — «Game database» (section 11).

BOTTOM RIGHT OF THE BOARD:
«Test» — test mode and the choice of rating category;
«Next» — the next position;
«Results» — the table of your results;
«About the program» — information about the program, choice of language, «EDITOR», the «Books» button;
«Exit» — close the program.

INDICATORS: «Your category», «Rating», «Points» and the position counter
(for example, «1 of 72″) show your progress.

4. NAVIGATING THE GAME
————————————————————————-

A row of buttons at the bottom right moves through the record of the game:

|> to the start of the game
<< на ход назад
>? To jump to a question mark in the book in the «Opening traps» menu
>> one move forward
> play the game back
■ stop playback
>| to the end of the game
If, while the game is being played back automatically, you click several times on the «Move back» or «Move forward» buttons, the playback speed will increase or decrease.
You can click on the moves in the text of the game with the mouse — the board will jump straight to the chosen position.

5. «POSITIONS» MODE
————————————————————————-

A section for unhurried study. Choose a topic in the «Positions» list —
a set of tasks will open.

* read the task and the comment on the position;
* make a move on the board — the program will tell you whether it is correct;
* if you cannot find the move, press «Show solution»;
* pressing «Next» takes the trainer to the following position.

The sets of tasks are selected according to the interface language, so you read the comments
in the language you have chosen.

6. «TEST» MODE
————————————————————————-

A test of knowledge with a score. Press «Test» and choose a rating category — from
2nd junior up to grandmaster

2nd junior – 1-3 moves – 30 tasks must be solved to earn it
1st junior – 3 moves – 50 tasks must be solved to earn it
2nd adult – 2-4 moves – 70 tasks must be solved to earn it
1st adult – 6 moves – 100 tasks must be solved to earn it
candidate master 8 moves – 150 tasks must be solved to earn it
master of sports 10 moves – 200 tasks must be solved to earn it
grandmaster 12 and more – 300 tasks must be solved to earn it
.
Each category requires a certain number of positions to be completed.
The higher the category, the more positions the player has to solve and the more
moves of the solution have to be played correctly.
For each position the player is given two attempts, shown as two green hearts.
With wrong answers the green hearts disappear.

* solve the positions one after another; there are fewer hints than in «Positions»;
* points are awarded for correct answers and deducted for wrong ones;
* see the outcome under the «Results» button.

A successfully completed test raises your rating category. It is shown in the
«Your category» field and is saved under your player name.
7. «GAME» MODE — A GAME AGAINST THE STOCKFISH ENGINE
————————————————————————-

Press the «Game» button and go through the steps:

1) choose a category of openings or a specific opening;
2) choose the opponent’s rating category — the higher it is, the stronger the engine plays and the fewer programmed mistakes it makes;
3) choose the colour of your pieces;
4) set the time control and the increment per move.
For games played for a rating category we have programmed the Stockfish engine to make
a certain number of bad or weak moves during play:
2nd junior – the Stockfish engine makes 5 bad moves in the first 15 moves
1st junior – the Stockfish engine makes 5 bad moves in the first 15 moves
2nd adult – the Stockfish engine makes 4 bad moves in the first 15 moves.
1st adult – the Stockfish engine makes 4 bad moves in the first 15 moves.
Candidate master – the Stockfish engine makes 3 bad moves in the first 15 moves.
Master of sports – the Stockfish engine makes 2 bad moves in the first 15 moves.
Grandmaster – the Stockfish engine plays at full strength and makes no bad moves

During the game:

* two clocks are running — yours and the engine’s;
* the moves are recorded in the panel on the right, where the name of the
opening played is also shown;
* right-clicking the «Game» button opens a menu: «Resign»,
«Offer a draw», «Stop the game».

The engine accepts a draw only in an objectively drawn position.

When the game ends it is saved, and it can be examined straight away with the
«GA» button. The program will offer to write the game to a PGN file.
The «GA» button can also be used to analyse the game at any point during it
After analysis, the «GA» button displays a picture with a report on the moves played in the game for that category

Hovering the mouse pointer over a number shows the move and its number, and opens a window with those moves.
If you click on a move in that window, you go straight to that move in the game and can analyse any moves in detail, with subvariations. This is very convenient for working on the player’s opening mistakes.
The report on the game is saved automatically to the «Reports» folder
The category is awarded on the results of a mini-match of two games — with White and with
Black.

8. ANALYSING A POSITION AND A GAME
————————————————————————-

THE «T=» BUTTON — POSITION ANALYSIS

Opens a window with three tabs:

«Znosko-Borovsky» — the classical positional evaluation under ten
headings: the centre, development, king safety, pawn
structure, space, piece activity, open files,
weak squares, the initiative, material. A verdict and an explanation are given
under each heading, and at the end an overall evaluation in plain words.
This is analysis «for a human»: it explains WHY the position is better.

«Tempi of development» — a detailed count of both sides’ tempi: how many
moves have been spent on developing each piece and who is ahead.

«Stockfish» — the engine’s evaluation. Calculation starts when you open
this tab or when you press the «Analysis» button above the board

THE «GA» BUTTON — GAME ANALYSIS

Analyses the whole game automatically. Specify the time per move and choose whether to analyse
a single game or all the games in the file. The program will offer to read the
written comments aloud.

After the analysis you will see the evaluation of every move and written comments on the quality of both sides’ play.

THE «ANALYSIS» PANEL AT THE TOP

Switches the engine on for the current position: it shows the evaluation, the depth and
the best continuation. It works independently of the «T=» and «GA» windows.

9. THE POSITION EDITOR
————————————————————————-

The editor is needed when a position is not in any of the tasks: you are going through a game from a book or one of your own, you have thought up an exercise, or you want to check an idea from a particular arrangement.

HOW TO OPEN THE POSITION EDITOR
Press the «About the program» button and press the «Editor» button. The editor opens with the position that is currently
on the board, so you do not have to set it up again — you only need to
adjust it.

HOW TO SET UP THE PIECES

* to the left of the board is the palette of pieces: click the piece you want, then
the square of the board where it should go;
* clicking again on an occupied square removes the piece;
* «Clear» — take all the pieces off the board;
* «Starting position» — return to the normal arrangement.

SIDE TO MOVE

The «White to move / Black to move» switch sets whose turn it is. This matters:
both the evaluation of the position and the checking of the solution depend on the side to move.

THE FEN FIELD

At the bottom the position is shown in FEN notation. It can be used both
ways:

* copy the FEN to transfer the position to another program;
* paste someone else’s FEN into this field and load the position into the editor.

WORKING WITH FILES

* «Load PGN» — open a game or a task from a file;
* «Save PGN» — write the position you have composed to a file, so that
you can later open it like an ordinary task.

FINISHING

The «Done» button transfers the position you have composed to the main board. From there
you can do everything you can do with an ordinary task: switch on the analysis,
look at the evaluation under «T=», search for the position in the databases through «GR» and «G».

10. «GAME RECORD» (THE «GR» BUTTON)
————————————————————————-

A window that can be placed on the right next to the board, after shrinking the trainer window.
This window shows which of the 155 books contain the position in front of you.
In this case the picture shows that after 1.E4 E5, 3121 games were found in the books, and the names of the books were displayed when the user clicked the white triangle under the word «Up»

THE BUTTONS OF THE «GAME RECORD» WINDOW

«New game» — start recording your own game; the previous game is cleared;
«Open file» — add PGN files from the trainer or your own PGN files to the game record;
«Save file» — write the game to disk;
«Up» / «Down» — move through the games found.

HOW IT WORKS

At the bottom of the window is a table of loaded files: the file name and the number of games in
which the current position occurs. The number is recalculated after
every move you make on the board, so you see at once how popular the
position is in theory and among the players represented in the 155 books.
Clicking the number opens the list of games found. Having chosen a game, you
can go through its moves and read the comments.

The line above the list shows the selected game; the white triangle on the right
expands the full list of books.

THE SUPERBASE OF BOOKS

A large database of chess books is supplied with the program —
it is attached to the game record automatically.

At any point in a game you can click the number under the word «Games»
and all the text information from the books relating to that position will be shown.
The book database is selected according to the interface language, so you read the comments on the games
in your own language: for Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian —
the Russian base; for Polish — the Polish one; for the rest — the English one.

The search runs on an index of positions rather than by re-reading the files, so it
works quickly even on a database of hundreds of thousands of games.

11. «GAME DATABASE» (THE «G» BUTTON)

The small «G» button above «Show solution» opens the «Game database» window — a quick view of the statistics for the current position.

WHAT IT SHOWS

For the position currently on the board you see the moves that every world champion and the leading grandmasters have played in it, together with statistics for each: how often the move occurs and with what result. This helps you understand which continuation is considered the main one and which is rare.
There is also a database of 206,284 games by players rated 2600 and above from 2016 to 2026.

HOW IT WORKS
The program builds an index of all the games in advance and keeps it in a separate file next to the database. That is why the statistics appear immediately when the window is opened, with no waiting.

If you have added or changed PGN files, the program notices this itself:
in the background it checks the files and completes the index without interfering with your work. Building the index for the first time on a large database takes some time — after that opening is
instantaneous.

The window updates automatically after every move on the board: make a
move and the statistics immediately refer to the new position.

12. HOW «GR» DIFFERS FROM «G»
————————————————————————-

Both buttons search for the current position, but they answer different questions.

«GR», «Game record»
Your working set of chess-book files. It answers the question «which books contain this position». It shows a list of specific games, lets you go through them move by move and read the comments, and analyse particular moves if necessary.

«G», «Game database»
Summary statistics. It answers the question «how do strong players usually play in this position»: which moves occur and with what result.
What matters is the overall picture. You can also click on the number of games found and all the games found will be loaded.
A quick summary of the moves played in the position is also available when you hover the mouse pointer over the number of games

Put simply: «GR» is for seeing which of the player’s moves appear in chess books and for quickly reading books with written comments; «G» is for seeing move statistics and which players played these openings, and for quickly browsing their games

13. BOOKS

Press «About the program», then «Books». A list will open of the books that
are supplied with the program. Double-clicking a title opens the book.

The selection of books depends on the interface language: for Russian, Ukrainian and
Belarusian there is one folder, for Polish its own, and for the other languages the
English-language one.

PGN files from this list of books open directly in the trainer — they can be
worked through like ordinary tasks.

14. RATING CATEGORIES, RATING AND POINTS

«Your category» — the player’s current rating category. It rises for mini-matches won in «Game» mode.
«Rating» — a numerical measure of the points scored for correctly solved positions.
The «Category» above the photograph is awarded for passing a category in «Test» mode

«Results» — a table with the history of your sessions.

All the indicators are stored separately for each player name, so several people can work at the same computer.

15. USEFUL DETAILS
————————————————————————-

* The «S» button is a quick way to start with a clean sheet: it resets the
position, the move record, the comments and the name of the open file.

* The up-down arrows next to the cogwheel flip the board if it is
more convenient to look at it from the other side.

* The «A» buttons to the right of the text fields enlarge the font of the
comments.

* A position from the editor can be checked with the engine straight away: transfer it
to the board with the «Done» button and switch on «Analysis».

* Changing the language changes not only the captions but also the content: the tasks,
the books and the game database.

* The «Chess opening trainer» program does not need the internet: the Stockfish engine and all the databases
are on your computer. The internet is needed only for the last three items of the voice engine.

Help for the chess combinational play trainer

After you launch the Positions Trainer:
1. Open the «About the program» menu and choose your native language from the 9 available.
The interface of the Positions Trainer will switch to your native language instantly.

2. If you wish, you can have the comments read aloud — press the «Voice the comments» button and tick the three boxes on the last three lines with TLS, so that you have a voice assistant. It will read out all the comments in any of the 9 languages.

3. If you wish, you can press «Position editor» to create or load your own positions in PDN format

4. If you wish, you can read the books by pressing the «Books» button

5. The «About the positions» window explains how to use the positions trainer

6. Next you should press the «Player» button and enter your first name and surname. You can add or delete a player at any time.

7. Above the window with the player’s name there is a window showing which type of positions the player is solving or which rating category they are working towards.

To the right of the window with the player’s name there is a window for loading the player’s photograph. Click on this window with the mouse and select a photo file with the extension jpg, jpeg, bmp or png. Above your photograph the trainer will show the rating category you have achieved. Below the photograph it will show the total number of points you have scored for solving positions.

8. To the right of the player’s photograph is one of the trainer’s main buttons — Positions.

Pressing «Positions» opens 7 menus for loading ready-made positions, and each menu also has a submenu > which you can enter by clicking any menu.
Menu 8 is used for loading PGN files and menu 9 for saving PGN files.
When a particular topic is selected in «Positions» mode and you right-click the «Positions» button, a window appears:

In this window you can set the number of moves for the solution and the number of positions the trainer should give you. The order of actions matters: first choose a topic after left-clicking the «Positions» button, and only then right-click the «Positions» button. Then everything will work properly.

9. Above the «Positions» button there is a «Show solution» button with two submenus: «Main line» and «Main line with sublines». The «S» button sets up the starting position.

10. To the right of the «S» button is a button with two arrows for flipping the board.

11. Below the «S» button there is a cogwheel-shaped «Settings» button, where you can set the number of positions to solve (10 by default) and choose whether the positions are shown on the board at random or in sequence. You can also set «In sequence» starting from position 5 if you have already solved 4 positions and want to continue from there.

Here you can also choose one of 4 board designs, whichever you like best.
We recommend the Classic board.

12. To the right of the «Cogwheel» button is the blue «GA» button — game analysis, where you can analyse selected games from the «Opening traps» or «Combinations in the openings» menus, or your own games loaded from PGN files

Pressing «Start» automatically analyses the selected game or games and assigns a Stockfish 18 evaluation to every move.

And after the analysis a «Move quality report» appears, in which you can see the accuracy and quality of the moves. Hovering over the number opposite a move shows the moves, and clicking a move displays it in the game notation and on the board. The analysis can be saved when you leave the report

13. To the right of the «GA (Game analysis)» button is the «Score chart» window,

which shows a colour chart and the number of points scored, in the form of green hearts, for each correctly solved position. You can reset the points to zero at any time by pressing «x», but the total score under the player’s photograph is not reset.

14. Above the «Score chart» window is the second main button, «Test», where you can choose one of 7 rating categories to work towards.

The trainer itself will tell you how many positions you need to solve to achieve the category you want. Once you achieve it, the category will be displayed above your photograph.
To the right of the «Test» button is the third main button, «Next», which you press after solving a position correctly.
If you press «Next» without solving the position correctly, one point is deducted.

15. To the right of «Next» there are 6 buttons. To find out what each one does, simply hover the mouse over it.

It should be added that the >? button is needed for the «Opening traps» submenu, so that the solution stops at the move marked with a question mark and the player solves that position themselves. If the question mark belongs to a White move, the board flips automatically and the player has to solve the position for Black.

16. To the right of the 6 buttons is the position counter. It shows the number of positions and which position is currently on the board.

To the right of the position counter there are two green hearts. If the player makes a wrong move, one of the hearts disappears and the player is given one more attempt at the correct move. If the player makes a wrong move a second time, the second green heart disappears too, the position is locked, a point is deducted and the player is invited to press «Next»

17. Below the two green hearts is the fourth main button, «Results»,

which shows Date, Time, Player, Position or Category, Score, Correct, Wrong, Skipped, Remaining, Viewed, Total, Accuracy.
This is very important information for the player, for parents and for the coach, for improvement.

18. The trainer uses the Stockfish 18 engine for analysis; to start it, press the «Analysis» button. The engine always shows the evaluation of the position from White’s point of view, together with the depth of analysis and the line.

The first large window, below the «Analysis» button, is used for the task set to the player. The player should read or listen to the task for the position to be solved. In the bottom right-hand corner of the window there is an icon for enlarging the text.

19. The second large window, below the first one with the task, displays the moves and comments contained in the solution, as well as the sublines.

And you can left-click on the moves to move through the solution of the position.
This is very convenient for studying a position. The bottom right-hand corner of this window also has an icon for enlarging the text of the solution.

20. The «Exit» button in the bottom right-hand corner closes the positions trainer.
